I think it would really help if we had an encyclopedia of sorts with the different jargon that is sure to appear in SC2, and those used in SC1.

It would help the new players, like myself, understand just what the hell you oldies are talking about. It would also improve the beta, so that other players could recreate bugs or try suggestions.

From what I've seen around the forums, people use terms like Micro and Macro, and I'm not sure what exactly they mean.

So please post in this thread with some terms and I'll add them to the list.

The Games:
"SC" - Starcraft
"BW" - Brood War
"SC2" - Starcraft 2

Conversational:

"GG" - good game

"GL HF" - good luck, have fun

"BM" (Bad Manner(ed)): Being a douche after having lost. Ex. Spamming plyons around the map when you obviously lost, Talking shit, Lifting off barrack/cc/etc when you lost, etc.

"QQ" or "QQing" = The act of crying or getting mad about something during a game, probably originating from DotA on WC3

Unit-based:

All:

"Zerg Rush"/"Zealout Rush"/"Marine Rush": To send in a race's basic unit in a large quantity early in the game.

"Drop" - Airlifting units in via overlords, warp prisms or medivacs

Terran:

"BC" = Battle Cruiser, the most powerful Terran air unit

"M&M" = Marines & Marauders

"MM" - Marine/Medic, or Marine/Medivac.

"Mech" - Units built in a Factory.

"Rax" - Barracks

"Reaper Raped" (RR): To be destroyed by the Terran Reapers within the first 5-10 minutes of the game

Zerg:

"Hatch(s)" = Hatchery/Lair/Hive or Hatcheries/Lairs/Hives

"Hydra(s)" = Hydralisk or Hydralisks

"Lings" - Zerglings

"Mutas" - Mutalisks

"OV" - Overlord

Protoss

"DT" - Dark Templar

"Gates" - Gateways

"Lots" - Zealots

"Obz" - Observer"

Building Based:

Stacking:

Command Based:

"APM" - Actions Per Minute. To see your APM, watch a replay of your self and in the top left drop down where it says "none" change it to APM to see it. Every time you perform an action its counted. The average is APM

"Micro" - The ability to skillfully use your units through taking advantage of game mechanics i.e. move and shoot at the same time or blinking nearly-dead stalkers to the back of your pack.

"Macro"- The ability to use waypointing effectively to have all your units on the map doing what they need to be doing with minimal player-attention. i.e. probe->build pylon> build pylon> gather minerals ; second probe-> scout area 1> area 2>area 3; third prob-> build assimilar> gather minerals

Strategy Based:
"backdoor" or "backdooring" = The act of getting inside your opponents base via a transport, etc. and dropping units for a surprise attack

2v2, 3v3, 4v4 Team Talk

"b" = turn around and go backwards

"d" = defend

"Go" = Attack, usually a point to attack to is specified at this time or before by your ally

Map Related:

"Choke": Narrow area of a base that can be used to block ground rushes.

"Supply Line": Also known as "line," this is the area of mineral gathering.

Need your help with more, and please correct me if I'm wrong!

Also, put their abbreviation, if that's what they are often known as.

Micro: Using an assortment of units with abilities to their full extent, being able to take down a force with minimal units and advanced strategy and ability usage.

Macro: Your ability to control mass amounts of units.

TLDR anyone? Not really starcraft jargon but I don't frequent forums often enough...

i'd argue that protoss can choke stuff to. if you work it similar to how a td works and use cannons to set a path tthe the enemy has to go through ttoss can to

"Micro": Using an assortment of units with abilities to their full extent, being able to take down a force with minimal units and advanced strategy and ability usage.

'Macro": Your ability to control mass amounts of units.

These definitions suck

Micro- (REQUIRES SKILL) The ability to skillfully use your units through taking advantage of game mechanics i.e. move and shoot at the same time or blinking nearly-dead stalkers to the back of your pack.

Macro- (REQUIRES SKILL) The ability to use waypointing effectively to have all your units on the map doing what they need to be doing with minimal player-attention. i.e. probe->build pylon> build pylon> gather minerals ; second probe-> scout area 1> area 2>area 3; third prob-> build assimilar> gather minerals

Both macro definitions are off. Usually when people talk about macro, they're talking about a player's rate of unit production. The term can also be loosely applied to general base management insofar as base management facilitates unit production.

Controlling a large mass of units is micro.

Using the interface to minimize attention investment could be considered a specific example of macro, but it is not a definition.

Macro is unit production and all related tasks.

What this guy said is how I've seen Blue use the term.

I don't quite understand. Rax means Double Barracks? But what exactly does that mean? Just putting up two barracks?

Toss:
gates: gateways
lots: zealots
Obz: observer
DT: dark templar

Terran:
MM: traditionally marine/medic, could be used to mean marine/medivac
mech: anything built from a factory
BCs: Battlecruisers

Zerg:
Hatch: Hatchery (he's going fast hatch!)
Mutas: mutalisks
OV: Overlord

all:
Drop: airlifting units in via overlords, warp prisms or medivacs

I'm sure there's a ton more out there, but that's all I got off the top of my head.

Also, I've never heard backdooring used to refer to a drop. In BW it meant using the oldschool version of destructable terrain to get into somebody's literal back door.

In SC2 it would be like destroying the rocks in the back of someone's base to get around his/her defenses.

Raydude

Hmm? Aren't rax = barracks? I've been using that since ever o.0

Kim - A player, selected by the matchmaking system, who greatly surpasses your ability and comes from a league two or more rankings above your own. ie: "Cut me a break, Kim. I don't even have gas yet."

Cacti

I've never heard of Kim before. Where's it come from?

Also, up to date now.

Deviant

Kim is probably a reference to David Kim. A good employee & player of SC2.
IMBA I believe means imbalanced.

ddddddddddddd will eventually turn into "drop, drop drop drop drop" when a player lags.

:D so d can equal defense, but it might evolve into something else :)

What does "wall" mean?

And "FE"

wall = building a blockade at the entrance ramp to your base

FE = Fast Expand

Also, I mostly see OL for Overlords and not OV

^ I thought so too

Also I thought backdooring only applied for DoTA and not common in normal RTS games

2v2, 3v3, 4v4 Team Talk

"b" = turn around and go backwards

"d" = defend

I also figured these were for mostly dota but then I only play 1v1 so I'm not an expert

Base Trade/base exchange: Both army sending their units at the same time to other player's base without confronting with each other (either by coincidence or on purpose) and racing to eliminate each other by destroying the entire building structures

Goons: Dragoons

Cracklings: Zerglings on speed/atk speed upgrade

I can't believe this isn't in yet:

Cheese: Cheese is a pejorative expression which refers to a strategy that is highly unconventional and designed to take one's opponent by surprise. In general, cheese is nearly impossible to defeat if it is not scouted but easy to defeat if it is scouted.
Examples are:
Proxy-Gateways: Placing your first Pylon and Gateway(s) near the opponent's base, trying to win the game quickly by Zealots only.
4/5-Pool: Sacrificing Economy, placing an early Spawning Pool to produce a set of 8 Zerglings to overrun the enemy.
BBS: Building two Barracks, preferably near the enemy's base, before placing the first supply depot.

edit: 4/5 pool is for SC1 and SC2 has 6 pool because of how the games start at the beginning

Jackinthebox

l2p - learn to play (learn to pray for those religious types)
cc - command center
proxy - buildings outside of main base (usually in the enemy base)

terran:
3MG - marine marauder ghost
3MB- marine marauder banshee
3MT- " " tank
