Actually, might be due to WoW maintenance. It is supposed to be done about now and coming back online.

Never noticed it before but it kinda bugs me that I can't even watch replays if I can't connect to battlenet

Same here.

Imagine if this sort of thing happened during a LAN party. "Sorry guys, we can't play on our local network because Blizzard is having trouble with their servers."

Seriously.....Sometimes I wonder if the people working at Blizzard at all resemble those who first created battle.net or starcraft.

I honestly to this day have a better explanation of why we are in iraq than why blizzard doesn't have Lan play...and that's saying a lot.

dude, this is beta, pretty sure they'll be LAN (there WILL be offline mode) but somehow, considering only a few thousand people in the beta, who would use LAN? seems like pretty low chances theres alot of people near you in the beta

i'd prefer they work on getting 3v3 and 4v4 maps and map editor ready before they think about adding LAN

It's a beta. Full functionality is not in yet, and frankly, should not be expected during a beta. They have already stated that local play will be available later.

Blizzard has announced over the past 3 years over and over, there will be no LAN. Where have you been?

Link or didn't happen.

I'm serious, give me a link. Anything to prove blizzard changed their minds. I went to blizzcon 2009 and they announced it again there, that there will be no lan.

Well for what it's worth, EVERYONE just got kicked out all at once, so whoever you were playing against also got booted. Who lost? Did everyone get a loss?

I also saw the thing about offline mode, I'm pretty sure it was in the Twitter dev chat.

Here we go: http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=23767157319&sid=3000

Q. Is logging in to Battle.net version 2.0 mandatory even for Single-Player Games?

A. Yes. StarCraft II does require an online connection and you must login the first time you play. We are in the middle of adding an "Offline" feature which allows you to play the Campaign offline if you, for example, are traveling and want to play on a laptop. Playing while connected allows your progress in the campaign to be saved online to your account. This means if you switch to a different computer to play you can pick up from where you were.

BUT this is for offline campaign, I still don't think there are any plans for LAN play. Hopefully this will support offline replay viewing as well.

I'm a freekin noob on battlenet, still trying to grab the learning curve with these short games. TBH I like building bases and completing missions, not pvp. But I am trying to enjoy the game regardless ;).

You may be correct. I was thinking I read it in the chat, but alas, it is not there. They ARE definitely working on an offline mode, however. They haven't said what all will be included in that, however. There's a chance some type of LAN mode will be available through that.

Yeah we have known about offline 1 player forever.

It's the LAN part that makes no sense.

More retrograding for Blizzard.

Let's create a wannabe facebook that hosts sc2, that has nothing that made bnet popular, that actually isn't social in anyway, that doesn't allow you to watch replays, that doesn't allow you to check player stats unless you add them as a friend and stalk them.

etc etc.

Now let's make this bnet 2.0 more laggy than the original and negate LAN play incase players hate our invention...they have to use it bwahahah !

maybe I missed it, but is there word of more gameplay types being released in beta? or are we just testing the new and improved battlenet? I mean the PvAI modes maybe some 5v5s or something along those lines?

Oh and the funniest part.

Dustin browder mentioned in an interview, they are going to make chat channels that are based off of your interests.

BWAHAHAHAHA.... are you serious? Hobbies and interests are for people with lives, our interests are starcraft, how bout you make a STARCRAFT channel.

I can just see it now...for some reason blizzard somehow knows you like chess, and you are sitting in a channel full of chess fans trying to get a game going.

LoL, ROFL wtf.....Fire the dweeb that thought facebook was a good idea and postponed beta for so long.

Terrorvision
03-18-2010, 07:50 PM
Yeah I was scratching my head as well about the chat channels being related to your interests. Perhaps they simply mean channels related to your favorite race or that kind of thing? They had channels like that in WC3 but no one ever actually discussed the race or any specific topic in there, it was just another chatroom.

I wonder if blizz will implement a blizz-wide chat, that way friends could chat from one game to another.

When he said base don interest, i think he meant, Terran/Protoss/Zerg channel, or 1v1/2v2/3v3 channels, and so on. Maybe other Blizzard titles featured as channels, like barbarian/paladin, Dk/druid/hunter. And so on... I doubt we will see a carpentry channel... REALLY!!

And to all the people that are complaining about b.net 2.0 being slower then the original, it's normal! I've never seen blizzard launch a product with quite enough server power! It's a logical way of doing ti though. I mean, those babies are rather expensive, so you wanna buy a fare amount, but you NEVER want to have useless ones. So they start out with less, just enough for us to play the game and enjoy it, then they will add more and more as they KNOW they are needed. Anyway, blizzard is well known for it's product improvement/maintenance over time.

So less QQ more PEWPEW! oh wait, all the WoW player made B.net 2.0 crash :(

You're kidding right??? I love the idea! Of course the wise pl will only give their real amounts to real friends, not online acquaintances. But it's a great idea. If my 2s partner(Sc or WoW 2s partner) log on, he will be able to see me wherever he is. It's a really nice thing if you ask me.

Actually this isn't true...because of bnet accounts, when you log on to starcraft, they will know you are on, based off of your character information in wow.

Yes it's nice, but implemented terribly.

I have no problem if they see you logged on, if you are in a channel like bnet.

It's stupid to have sooooooooooooo many tabs opened up.

Well, if you don't give your real Id to too many ppl, the 11th tab won't pop often. And it will always be someone you really know and most certainly want to play with, otherwise you would not have given him your real ID.

What is'nt? I've said a good many things...

And they will know you are on base don you B.net account, they will actually see your real name and e-mail address. One of my real life friend is in the beta with me and i see his name instead of pseudo/character name whatever. I don't see why it would be different Sc2-Sc2 then WoW-Sc2.

It wont work...are you telling me, you have never given your phone number to someone you didn't want to have it, simply because it's rude to say no?

Once again, not the problem. The problem is the lack of a channel. If i play starcraft 2 for 10+ years like I did starcraft 1, I'm going to gain friends over time that are going to add me and place little tabs at the bottom of my screen.

If I'm up to 10+ tabs during beta, what happens when I have a clan? No channel, everyone has a tab opened for everyone...it's just plain stupid.

Hmmm, they will implement channel, it's just not what they wanna test ATM, I think Blizzard don't want us loosing time between games. :p

Those Tabs are for "whispers". So what we see ATM is the whisper system, and only that. Chat channel will come later. I personally prefer tabs for personal conversations, so you can go away 2 min and you won't have missed a whisper due to a WTF HUGE amount of chat in the chat room.

Edit : In fact, yes I very seldomly give my cellphone number. And saying no can be healthy!

Offline mode and no LAN play are not mutually exclusive. Unless Blizzard outright says they are going against what they've been saying about no LAN, I doubt there will be LAN in the offline mode. Even if it's not DRM like they claim, it's the spirit of DRM. Assassin's Creed 2 uses the same model, it just isn't as good a game and doesn't add and features since it's forcing everyone online anyway. If Starcraft 2 doesn't have an offline mode for single player, I'm not sure if I'll get it. It's an incredible game, but I could do a lot with the time I would put in Starcraft 2.
