View Full Version : So the art is killing me.

Everything looks either purple or brown. Maybe I'm going color blind. All of the zerg units look like they took a base zerg model and kept adding things (mainly insect legs and vomit) on to him.

I took the liberty of creating this image that might help you understand what I'm seeing.

Turn your graphics up? SC2 has amazing art direction for me.

PRETTY

It's not the graphics level it's the units/buildings. A carrier is a void ray with more bells, and they both look like flying forges.

Doesn't that make sense, though?

A tank, in real life, looks a bit like a humvee with armor and a turret.

A fortress is a building with more armor.

Architecture has patterns, and consistency. That's why Russian cities have a theme, and individual buildings share similar characteristics, and Spanish, and American, etc etc etc.

Every unit from the race shouldn't look much different. I mean, how many ways can you dress up or armor-up a man or vehicle?

I know, it's a game, not entirely realistic, but I for one actually favor the architectural consistency.

He was referring to the game, he didn't say everything.

More cars need to look like Model Ts

More cars need to look like Model Ts this i know he is reffering to the game, i just used the logic he used when talking about the game and put in a different text to see if he understood how he sounded....

I agree with you. A lot of the units and buildings look too similar to be different. i'm forced to set way points a few inches away just to known when a unit is done. The main ones that are confusing are protoss air units and the star gate. the robotics bay and then colosses. these units are especially bad because they are literally on top of the building which blends them in more.

i think using a slightly different base color for the units and buildings would help a lot.

The unit art in the first Starcraft was much more distinct. A carrier looked so different than a scout that you could never confuse the two.

Now a void ray could easily hide inside a carrier and you'd never see it. The art direction seems kind of lazy.

The unit art in the first Starcraft was much more distinct.

This is an artifact of the game being 640x480 resolution and using a 256 color palette.

There was only so much detail they could put on something at the time. It was much easier to simply make bright technicolor units with extremely unique profiles.

I'll agree that in a few cases this made it easier to quickly identify units, but with the technological advancements in video quality since 1998, I would prefer units to not look like Crayola-colored Warhammer miniatures. You can make them look this way if you turn video settings to low, if that's your thing.

After playing the game a while, I don't really have a problem identifying anything that's going on, with the possible exception of various Protoss units clumped under colossi, which is ridiculous.

i must add something, i have everything turned up to ultra, on a widescreen 22'' monitor, and i must say when i build a pheonix and dont set the rally, i would never notice them there floating above my stargates... but other then that everything looks great

You'd better not be suggesting taking the hydralisks' hat away.

But I tend to have rally points always a bit away from the production building for everything, so usually a non-issue unless I forget.

ya i usually do but sometimes in the heat of things i may reset the rally or forget to put one out, and ya the observers give me troubles to find even when i do set a rally or sent them somewhere

Turn your video settings up. anything from medium on up looks fantastic.

It's not the graphics level it's the units/buildings. A carrier is a void ray with more bells, and they both look like flying forges.

Side affect of new technology in graphics. You just need to adapt. They look perfectly fine, just play some more and you'll get used to the new style.

I really don't get what you are talking about...

Do roaches and hydralisks look like zerg units? Yes... Do they look like each other? No

and seriously Void-rays and Carriers look nothing a like. I mean sure they have similar style but I would never mistake one for the other.

All the units of a particular side have similar style but I seriously have no issues mistaking one unit for another.

They do all fall under the «car» category... so I mean, they all have four wheels and are longer than they are wide. I really liked your analogy lol. Silly OP.

I will admit that some units appear to be a little sombre, but I don't find the hydra and the roach look much a like... aside that they both look like zerg... which is what Blizzard was going for I'm sure.

Exactly. It's stuff like this. The units tend to blend into each other/buildings. I'm not suggesting putting some massive blue aura round each unit, but something would be nice.

Everything looks like it was hit with the flatten image/blur tools from Photoshop.

some things do bother me:
hellion attack animation is so bad its funny
same with scanner sweep
same with hydra shooting spines (underwhelming)
and on the 2v2 map with sharedish bases everything is way too gray its hard to distinguish units

haha but it sure would be a riot, a muscle car with marines in it doing drivebys on Zerglings and Zealots. and running over what they dont shoot!

hmm a Moble Bunker that could be used to transport marines but they could shoot out of, Starcraft needs LAVs! or something like the Striker.

course that would be rather OP. a transport with guns and the marines shooting out lol.
