Why can spine crawlers attack accross the map but cannot attack air?

Because they are ground-specific base defense.

I believe he's talking about realistic physical mechanics. Well, the reason they have this is to prevent them from creating a Zerg version of the Protoss Photon Cannon, is what I'm thinking of.

Well animation itself is different thing :) it is weird, but i like it, sunken was... a bit weird too! They kept the weirdness :) And yes, it would be out of balance that zerg would have photon-like defense as well.

Air units are a lot further up than they look.

I liked the sunken a lot more, even if it was significantly less visually obvious.
I dunno, the feeling of Zerg has changed.

Definitely has changed...but I've got to say I'm pretty partial to the tentacle stab to the face.

in reality (Well SC isnt reality anywaysss) Battlecruisers and carriers would probably take up atleast your entire base. They are drawn to a scale to create a balanced RTS lewl. TBH though I would enjoy a more Sunken-esque
animation from the spinecrawler which would effective not ruin the laws of physics

Stab in the face is just awesome, specially when you stab a marine. It just goes *splat*. Also, here is something interesting for you: Attack your Spore Crawler with your Spine Crawler............ Yep...
well maybe the spine to the face is only 5 - 15ft off the ground, iam sure most air units esp the big boys would be in space shooting down, i dont think there would be room on map to have 12+ carriers in there real scale
but in the end it dose not have to make sence cause the game its self dont make sence, the laws of physics are buggered up from the time you log in
I'll just confirm what a few other people posted. Air units are high up in the air and farther out of reach than ground units are, although it doesn't look like that from the game perspective.
Also, I want to slap whoever was talking about something breaking the laws of physics in this game.

Let's be honest here guys. Spinecrawlers are terrible.

Compared to the rest of the defenses... yeah they really are especially cost wise.

Okay now that's just wrong.

why can't collosi attack air when they're kinda in the air and pew pews long range lazers

it dosnt have to make sence because, 2 alien races and humans all killing each other dont make sence
i know what your gonna say, " but if the races did exist and this was going on" well if your gonna make that much up y not add a bit more and say colossi cant attack air, and thors are weak v air and zerg a race that surives by evolving faster than water flows cant evolve into a unit that smashes all

Spine Crawlers cost two thirds of a photon cannon, do the same damage plus an extra 10 to armored guys, has 1 more armor, has more health and can move itself around in a pinch. It just doesn't detect or hit air units, but I'd say Zerg gets a pretty sweet deal with static defense.

Looks like you just gave up here. It doesnt have to make sense IRL, but rather make sense in the games reality. Some things just dont seem to fit, even for the games reality.
Imo though, collusus cant attack air, despite being miles tall, is because their laser cannons were built to aim downwards to shoot. Yeah protoss arent perfect, they didnt realize that they made their collosus that big, and thusly didnt give the laser cannons a pivot or whatever to angle at air units.

Actually the lasers would continue like all light beams, they would dissipate over distance (get wider). The laser would not be focused enough to do any damage by the time it hit the sun.

All races are guilty of having drunken tech scientists, Viking cant shoot up or down has to do a transformation to do so, Banshee is in the air cant shoot a target in the air. ect ect

I like the animation, its like whipping a unit with an organic car antenna

You see, the spine crawler detects ground based attackers through tentacles in the ground that detect vibrations. This is why when uprooted it can't attack, because it can't feel where the enemy units are. This is the same reason it can not attack air units.*
Now you have your scientific reason
*Liable to be made up

All races are guilty of having drunken tech scientists except for Zerg, their issues are all Darwin's fault...

Why do they have to remove lift off capabilities after adding the giant canons to planetary fortress ? For that matter, why remove cargo space after adding the satellital antenna? The command center looks huge enough to still have space for 5 SCV after adding the antenna...
why can't collosi attack air when they're kinda in the air and pew pews long range lazers
Here's my made up reason.
The collosus is fitted with fairly heavy duty laser cannons, designed to operate at maximum power for moderate lengths of time. This is opposed to say, quick burst firing on phoenixes and photon cannons, or the slow energy build up of void rays. As a result, the collosus weapons must be robust and have heavy cooling. Since air units tend to be very mobile and cover a wide range of altitudes, it was not practical nor feasible for the Protoss engineers to create a reliable system that could quickly cover such a wide range of angles. By limiting the cannon movement to only a few degrees, the cannons could be constructed soundly and still cover wide areas on the ground. Air defense was left to the more mobile phoenix.
