So after being placed in the Copper League (I tried Zerg and needless to say I am terrible), I have decided to put together a series of matches on Youtube called "From Copper to Gold," where I will be trying to make my way from the Copper League up to the Gold League before beta is out.
The first video has no commentary, the rest now DO have commentary!
What you can expect to see in this series:
- Strong unit micromanagement
- Basic SC2
- These videos are just replays with commentary
- Building units
- Terran play and learning throughout the videos
- Commentary
- Decent Micro skills (~70APM so far, up from my average of 40 3 days ago)
What you won't see in this series:
- Uber Micro (150+), at least not for a few months.
- Amazing feats of play, at least for the most part
- Ridiculous over-the-top strategies, 99% of the time.
My previous experiences in RTS Gaming:
- I played starcraft 1 for a total of 10 minutes of my life
- Played war3 and war3x extensively
- Played Command and Conquer: RA2 on and off

I'm actually in the middle of doing episode 2 right now, it's a TvP game that gets pretty hairy here and there, it's a nice switch from the mirror in the first.
Also, commentary on this one.

Thanks for sharing :) Thinking of starting to uploaded some videos of playing myself even though I'm not very good at all.
I enjoy what im doing with this project, so you're very welcome!
You should post if you think people might be interested to see anything in the video imho.
At this point and time, starcraft 2 beta is a really hot topic, almost any video of gameplay, a fleet makeup, a counter consideration would be strong points of interest.
In my next video I squared up against someone that went roaches on a 1v1 map, I think it's a good time to show the strong abilities of the new MMM combination, so expect to see some of that very soon.
I don't want to oversaturate the channel with videos, so I'm trying to stick 1 new video every 48 hours, but it is highly probably when this is all said and done, there will be a mix of winning a losing matches of about 50 games, and sometime in between im going to throw in some sort of technique video of some of the finer points being highlighted in SC2, such as scouting in certain areas, things like that.

The name... copper to gold... you're aware that gold isn't the highest league, right? I mean, it sounds catchy, rags to riches style, but sounds like you're setting your sights pretty low to me.
I know how it sounds, haha.

It is a neat idea, I have been saving all of my replays from my days of copper up till i get to gold or plat. (Missing a few since my comp froze for my matches and placement games hence why i started in copper).

What video format do you save your files in? I can't find one that works well.

Could you narrow that down a tad? .avi alone has 12 some different variations. I record in 1280x1024, full sized with fraps. All formats I try I can never get it to go full screen, it always has black surrounding it.

I got placed in bronze league after going 5-5 in qualifiers and have been promoted twice and I'm currently closing in on the top 8 of a gold league yesterday. Hope to be platinum soon, maybe I'll see you there.

Just remember, winning is winning is winning no matter how you do it, but if you're not winning then there is a problem. Don't always go with one strategy because some people with curb stomp that out.
If you're not first you're last.
And maybe i'll get up to platinum one day too. No one was leaving our division in copper even though they'd jump out to 50-40, 60-50, and finally it was like a mass exodus yesterday of everyone in the top 10 getting promoted from copper to bronze...

haha, now that you mentionit, I had a friend in my wow guild named iZealot. When I look back, he always corrected me for say zee-lot. Sorry.
As for the videos...
I play in 1440x990, Medium settings.
I record with Fraps at 30 FPS, in Half Size.
In Sony Vegas my "Render As" settings are:

How fun! I personally do three depots to block my ramp, you can fit them in exactly. Make sure you don't leave ANY space open, you can save minerals on bunkers and spawn more marines that way.
You can them put the barracks behind it so it's safer, and this makes it easier to use tech lab or reactor, as well as swapping spaces with a factory or starport when you get to that point of the game.
We should fight sometime <3

I used to call it zee-lot. I also used to call ballistas baal-is-ta instead of ball-is-ta. dunno why i remember that now tho =\

I have already seen this video, and it is quite hilarious, and extremely true to the definition of the kid in the background who goes,
"Dude I am watching this on a 56' screen and this is the craziest **** I have seen all day!"
If I ran into that.. there's only one thing I'd do.. Lift off... and to stay true to the Terran Reputation on these forums, I would clearly sit in the corner of my map while I did homework and watched Television.

Well it's not uploading, it's rendering, it's gonna take about 20 more minutes, the upload is fast, the format it ends up in is kind of small.
If you can't be up for another 45 minutes or so, you might want to pass on tonight.

I just got my beta key today, and now that i can post, i want to let you know i have been following your videos since you posted the first one!
Its fun to see a non-pro player point out his mistakes and climb up the ladder, just watching your replays has given me a little bit of an edge now that im playing.

This is great, not only did you give me a free bump, you're completely off the mark.
Actually, a lot of people don't have beta, and people that have beta have just used it and scrounged it up. With the NDA lifted on the game, I just thought this would be a fun way to show some gameplay, and have a good time with some video.
I apologize for the way you feel that this is being depicted. I don't get paid for this, I don't get any more real life friends for doing this, I don't benefit in any way whatsoever except for the satisfaction that people that were not fortunate enough to get a beta key have the opportunity to see some game footage every few days when I upload some new material.
I don't need the hugs, there's a shop down the street that sells those and attention for a low affordable cost. Sometimes a project on Youtube is about having fun, and from the response you wrote on my thread, I am guessing you don't have enough.

If I can get my hands on some good Toss videos from my buddy (he switched from zerg to toss in this game) I will gladly put them on the tube. It wont be a part of the C2G series, but I can get some insight on some things here and there.

I've noticed you never seem to use Siege Mode on your tanks o_O Do you not bother to research it? Tanks are nice but when put into Siege Mode they go from good against armored to crazy-ass splash damage with unfair range. A couple of Sieged Tanks by your wall can discourage units from getting anywhere close since they have like 9 range :>

i watched episode 5, and i just want to give you some tips for terran vs zerg
first off, im prty sure u did.. but get a 2 barracks, 1 with reactor 1 wit tech lab, and get upgrades instead of tanks.. later on get medivacs instaed of getting 2 starports make a reactor, and get about 4-5 barracks, secondly go for your natural expansion first. and you need to scout the high yield minerals at all times.. keep a scv near the vision thingy (cant remember name)
